Valentine's Day was a special day for my husband and me because, unlike the past few years, we spent it together. Were you to meet my husband, you might form an instant impression so far off mark, but if you stayed the distance to know him, you would find a most unselfish person whose sense of family is very expansive indeed. Because my husband has always championed my career, he would let me leave for the Presidents' Weekend to travel with my best friend and 16-25 students to the largest Model UN in the United States, NAIMUN. Add to that, trips to Washington, DC, for 3 days, 15 days abroad (again with best friend and students), and countless field trips throughout the year that bring me home well after dinner.
So, this year was different, special in so many ways because I stayed put. Part of remaining at home was acquiring "the girls," and if you know me, you know far more about them than you might want to know, because I blog about them frequently (but now located on their own blog, Learning Llamas). But the other part was timing, of returning to my center, becoming more grounded, finding a place between career and those I love. At home I am and loving it, but not without missing, in those unguarded moments, being in a different place. It is hard to break with habits of a lifetime, but from this very special weekend, I can tell you that it is something I should have done much sooner.
